Windows limits your Internet speed: 3 changes so that this does not happen

There are many reasons why the Internet may be slower than normal. It may be that you have contracted more Mbps than the ones that reach you on the computer and you have already tried everything and you do not know why this is due, why it is so slow. It may be that Windows is limiting your Internet speed and we can go to the computer settings to avoid this problem.

We must bear in mind that the contracted speed is the speed that comes out of your cable router. So the operator or the company does not have to assure you that this speed will arrive if you connect from any other room or if you connect via WiFi. But the normal thing is that it is more or less similar or that there is not a huge difference between what you receive and what you have contracted.

Settings in Windows

If you want to fix Windows settings to prevent it from throttling your speed, there are a number of steps you can take to fix it as soon as possible.

The steps we must follow are the following:

  • Open Windows settings on the computer.
  • Go to the "Network and Internet" section.
  • From here, look for the “Advanced network settings” section.
  • Click where it says "More network adapter options".

Once here, we will arrive at a new window where we will see a series of sections and options. We have to choose the Ethernet adapter of the computer. When you have clicked on it, you must click on “Properties”.

  • Open the properties of the Ethernet adapter.

  • You will see that a new window opens with options.

  • There will be four or five tabs at the top.

  • Look for the tab that says “Advanced Options”.

  • You will see a list of properties.

  • Look, in the list, for the option “Speed&Duplex”.

Once we have reached this point, we must choose in the column on the right the values that we want that property to have. In this case, if you see that the Internet is going very slow, you can put the option “1.0 Gbps Full Duplex”.

When you have done so, try to do a speed test to see if you can already connect to the Internet enjoying all the contracted megabytes or not.

Other problems

Maybe it has nothing to do with the computer or the configuration itself, but there are other problems that we may not pay attention to and take for granted that it works. For example, the Ethernet cable you are using may be old and the speed it allows will be limited. No matter how much you have contracted, if the cable is old, it is likely that it is limited to 100 Mbps and that is why it does not reach you. Try a current Gigabit cable to make sure this is not the cause of the internet not being fast enough. It may also be that the cable is damaged, but it would be rare for this deterioration to lead you to exactly a round figure. For example, at 100 Mb.

You can also find limitations in your network card, for example, if it is old or very basic. Or, the most common problems, that there is an error in the router or some configuration that is limiting the maximum speed at which you can connect.
