Why you should never touch your home's fiber optic cable?

When the technician comes to your house, he leaves everything ready so that the Internet can work. It depends on each home and each circumstance, one type of installation or another is required. It may be that everything is ready and it is enough to connect the router. But maybe not. That you have to throw cable down the hall or through any room without being able to hide it. And there is one thing that you should always keep in mind: you should never touch the fiber optic cable in your house.

We usually try that the installation does not damage the aesthetics of our house. Nobody wants to have a cable down the hall but sometimes it is unavoidable and there can be no other alternative. Or on the wall of the living room or the entrance. And when the technician leaves we fold it, touch it and try to hide it. This is the worst thing you can do because it will only do one thing: mess up the installation and have to start all over again to get all the cable back.

Is very ugly

There may be those who believe that it is absurd to touch the cable because it is ugly or does not look good, but it is common. We tend to hide the router behind a piece of furniture, with a box or by putting things in front of it so that it cannot be seen in the living room, hallway or bedroom. And by hiding it we also manipulate the cable. It looks a lot, it looks ugly. And you usually fold or roll it up to hide it or simply to tidy it up and show it as little as possible. Twisting or bending it can break it and make it not work. Although at first glance it seems that it is fine, if the inside of the cable is broken, the Internet will not work and you will have to notify the company.

Self-installable router

If you have a self-installable router, you will have no choice but to touch the fiber cable to connect it to the device. It happens, for example, with companies like Movistar that send us the device with the instructions and it is enough to plug it into the current, the fiber port and the telephone port. It is easy and has no complications. Only one: Movistar warns of the risks when handling the cable and how delicate it is. So yes, you have no choice but to touch it to plug it in, but avoid bending it or pressing it hard or rolling it up because the interior can be damaged and the Internet will not work properly, even if you have a new router.

I want to move the router site

You cannot move the router from site by yourself without notifying your company so that a technician can take care of it. You can do it but it is not advisable and it depends on the circumstances and where you want to move it. In other words, move it a few centimeters if the cable reaches well and you handle it very carefully. But do not move it to another room or, in case you have done work, you want to change it a few meters to the side. Moving it has many risks and you can break it, making the Internet stop working. It is very fragile and delicate. When trying to move the rosette you can have problems with the cable: bending it, coiling it or tying knots is always a bad idea because you will damage the fiber cable.

Can I fix it if it's broken?

You can't fix the fiber cable if it's broken unless you're an expert. It will be a technician who must assess whether or not it can be fused (it depends on the circumstances or the centimeters that are available) or if it has to be replaced completely and do the installation again by inserting a new cable. Depends. The technician will be able to decide if he wants to splice the broken sections and fuse or if he needs to be replaced. But it's not something you can do by yourself because you usually don't have a splicer or know how to use it. That is why it is better that you do not touch the fiber cable if you do not want to stay for a few days without Internet.
