This is how I managed to free up more than 20 GB of space on my mobile without deleting any important files

Having a mobile with little storage space or simply neglecting it can cause the memory to be full without leaving space for new apps, photos and other files. In my case it was a little more than the latter. I did not reach the limit of memory, but I did find more than 20 GB of completely unnecessary files.

For this I resorted to some of the already classic tricks with which to free up space on a mobile. Although in my case I only did four things. Probably scratching more would have freed up even more space, but those were enough and I think it can be just as useful for you. Even if you think you're keeping storage at bay.

Take a look at the app drawer, it never hurts

As I already indicated in the title of this post, my main objective in freeing up space was not having to delete something that was really important. Although you should already know that any freeing up of space implies yes or yes having to delete something.

In this case I wanted to open the app drawer and look at each app that I store one by one. I am fully aware of the presence of Telegram, WhatsApp, Twitter, Instagram, as well as other apps that I use in my day to day. However, due to that habitual use, I chose to keep them. I did the same with those that, although more sporadically, I also take advantage of from time to time.

In this visual analysis of the app drawer I came across ‌many "just in case". This is the name given to those applications that I use very few times a year and sometimes not even that. Why do I still have them installed? Well, just in case . I am sure that I am not the only one with this thought and I am also sure that in most cases those "just in case" never translate to a real utility.

If it were the case that I need those apps in the future, there is no drama either, since they will always be available to me on Google Play. However, by not having them installed you can already gain an interesting free space. In my case it would not be more than 2 GB at most, although I remember other occasions when it was much more, so it is necessary to carry out this process of self-analysis of the use of the apps from time to time.

Google Files as a key to free up space

There are many functions that Google Files offers as a file manager on Android and that is why it is through this app that I have managed to free up more space. It is native to Google and that is why it is present by default on many mobile phones, although if you deleted it or it did not come to you, you can download it for free from Google Play.

Downloads you forgot... And they take up 10 GB!

I was one of those who thought that I barely downloaded files with my mobile, but I really wasn't aware of it. Downloads from Telegram that I think are not stored on my mobile and they are, photos that I download from the Internet for occasional use and then I don't delete, and even videos and other large files that I download from my mobile sporadically and then upload them to Google Drive and process them from your computer.

So, I looked at my download folder and found that it was 10 GB. The surprise came when I entered and saw that except for two or three files, the rest was totally expendable. You can imagine what I did: I saved those few important files in another folder and proceeded to completely empty the downloads folder.

So, I think it's good advice to always keep an eye on this folder before chaos ensues. And if you don't have it in mind on a regular basis (most likely taking into account everything we have in mind), now is a good opportunity for you to take a look at it.

Blessed be the junk file cleaner

Although it is true that the process to delete the cache of Android apps does not go through Google Files, the truth is that this app has a fairly accurate cleaner when it comes to removing junk files.

This tool is found in the Clean tab and in my case, after freeing a large number of download files, I barely had a few MB to free. However, I do remember other times when this cleaner freed up quite a bit of space for me. And all this without losing important files or data.

Goodbye to duplicate photos or that are of no use to me

Without leaving Google Files I was able to find and remove duplicate photos. Why are they created this? Well, directly when we download them several times thinking that we don't have them or unconsciously when we receive them through different channels and they remain stored. The fact is that together they can take up a lot of space. And more if we add photos that have come out blurry.

Within the aforementioned section of Cleaning Google Files we find several suggestions regarding these photos. And here there are also suggestions in relation to deleting old captures or the possibility of deleting from the local copy those that are already in Google Photos. Having photos in the internal storage while in the cloud is unnecessary, unless we want to have access to them offline, for which we can download them individually at a specific time and then delete them again.

Bonus track if you are an intensive user of WhatsApp

For my personal use, WhatsApp is not my first choice in messaging and that is why what I am dealing with with the app and its files is residual. However, this was not always the case and I am fully aware that it is a real space sprue. And if you use WhatsApp daily, it is likely that you will suffer from it.

Therefore, I think it is convenient to remember the existence of a storage management tool in WhatsApp. This is located within Settings > Storage and data > Manage storage. In this section you will be able to manage all the files received and sent, being able to order them by size and delete them partially or totally in order to save a few GB of space on the mobile.
