Starlink reaches more and more countries as an attractive option, especially for users who live in areas far from traditional services.
SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet service has generated great expectation around the world.
An ever-growing constellation of satellites is being deployed by Elon Musk 's company to bring fast internet to even the most remote locations.
But how fast is Starlink? Data from Ookla, the company behind the well-known SpeedTest and DownDetector, shows us this.
Starlink prevails among satellite operators in North America
There is no doubt that Starlink is the best satellite internet operator today.
In both Mexico, Canada and the United States, SpaceX is seen above 90 Mbps download, far surpassing Viasat and HughesNet, which have their best speeds just above 22 Mbps.
And more importantly, Starlink's latency is much lower, peaking at 79 ms. Other satellite companies exceed 600 ms.
Starlink still has ground to improve. Downloads barely reach 19.10 Mbps in Mexico, where it performs best in North America.
And if we measure the latency compared to the fixed internet, there is no comparison when these services reach maximums of 14ms.
Starlink in Latin America: Chile as the spearhead
Starlink already has a license to operate in Peru, although it has not yet officially started its services for the country.
In Chile it is available and with promising results. Average downloads of 110.49 Mbps, upload of 21.05 Mbps and latency of 38ms make it a great option in places far from fixed internet connections.
Compared to fixed operators, Starlink has it more complicated in Chile. The Latin American country has the second best fixed internet connection in the world, according to SpeedTest.
Fixed operators in Chile average 206.97 Mbps in downloads, 106.79 Mbps and latency of 6 mss.
Starlink Vs. fixed internet in Peru
Starlink looks much more attractive in Peru, which ranks 68th for fixed internet globally, according to Ookla.
What Starlink offers in Chile exceeds the average download speed and upload speed. Operators in Peru exceed Elon Musk's company in latency and, of course, in the cost of the service.
Starlink has been improving over time
Ookla's report indicates that Starlink has improved its speeds in the last year.
A 58% improvement in Canada and 38% in the United States reveal the potential for Starlink to improve by amplifying its satellite constellation.
How much does Starlink cost?
Starlink started out offering its basic service at $99 a month, but has raised its rate to $110.
In addition, Starlink users will have to purchase a reception kit (antenna, cables and router) for US$599, in addition to paying US$60 in shipping costs.
Starlink also has a premium service with speeds up to 500 Mbps, which costs $500 a month.
Starlink's premium service requires a special antenna that costs $2,500.
Although Starlink connects with satellites, the company does not ensure the mobility of its devices. Users have to pay an extra US$25 per month to opt for a "mobile plan" that allows them to move their plate, for example, in towable vehicles.
