Microsoft is using new ways to pressure you to upgrade to Windows 11

Microsoft continues to look for new techniques to pressure users into abandoning Windows 10 and switching to Windows 11. And from what we're seeing, it seems to be working. Now they're launching a new strategy to apply even more pressure.

Time is running out, and Microsoft needs the community of Windows 10 users to turn around and install Windows 11. For now, the statistics confirm that things are going well, but as the months go by, it's clear the company needs to move on.

More benefits with Windows 11

One thing Microsoft is currently opting to do is to make it clear to users that upgrading to Windows 11 means getting better features and functions. The truth is, the company is trying to cover all fronts and convince users in every way imaginable. The latest thing they've opted to do is emphasize that, with Windows 11, you'll have access to the Smart App Control tool, a feature that, as the company indicates, can protect you against potentially malicious applications. This clarification about Smart Control wasn't previously indicated on Microsoft's support page, but it's been added to highlight the security enhancement you'll get with the latest version of the operating system.

The comment is also included in the section on "how to reduce the chances of installing unwanted software". It's one of those breadcrumbs the company casually leaves behind, and it clearly knows what it's doing: trying to demonstrate how highly recommended it is to upgrade to Windows 11. And, in reality, they're not exactly making anything up. With Windows 11, we have new security tools and features that will help enhance your experience with the operating system.

With Smart App Control, users have the opportunity to use cloud security to allow the operating system to block services or applications it deems malicious. When it was originally released, this feature presented some issues and didn't provide particularly efficient performance, but it has improved over the months. Today, there's no doubt that this tool is providing good performance, so it's sure to be considered by some users when they consider upgrading to Windows 11.

The latest statistics

With time running out, Microsoft knows it has to push hard and get more people to upgrade to Windows 11. It's doing so with techniques like the one mentioned above and by testing other features that aren't yielding bad results either. Statistics indicate that Windows 11 is gaining ground and that its market share has already reached 42.07% of the desktop sector. This is a significant increase compared to the 26.68% share the operating system had in March of last year. But that doesn't mean that, dramatically, Windows 10 still has a market share of 54.79%. It is true, however, that this has decreased compared to the figures from a year ago when Windows 10 held an almost untouchable percentage of 69.07%.

The point is, as Microsoft knows, many computers still running Windows 10 belong to organizations, offices, municipalities, libraries, and other places where there's no real need for the upgrade. And the company is also clear that when Windows 10 support ends, that's when the problems will start. By then, though, we assume Microsoft will find some way to bring order to what could be a complicated situation.
