Windows users are getting update errors in Microsoft 365 and Office: here's how to fix it

Windows update problems are not only affecting the operating system itself, but also its main applications. You may be experiencing failures in Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Office these days, and let me tell you that you are not alone, because apparently there are a large number of users who are reporting errors when trying to update the programs that make up the two services of the North American company. If you are one of those affected, there is a solution that ends this incident.

In the world of computing, there are times when you are truly satisfied and other times when you want to throw it all away. And it is no wonder, because Microsoft is dealing with severe problems in its main work programs and this situation is making its users start to lose patience.

For the past month, Microsoft 356 and Microsoft Office customers have been experiencing error 30088-27, which only appears when trying to install the respective updates. In fact, the hardware and software company is already aware of this issue after receiving dozens of reports in which this code is reported.

Specifically, affected users are those who subscribe to Microsoft 365 and Office for versions 2016, 2019, and 2021, and report the following message: “Something went wrong. We're sorry, we ran into a problem while we were checking for updates. Please check your network connection and try again later". It has also been reported that Office version 2406 has been affected (build 17726.20126).

How to fix Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Office error?

At the moment, Redmond has not released official information about the origin of this failure in its office services, but it has been known that to avoid the error message constantly appearing when opening each of the programs, it is necessary to disable updates and return to the previous version of Office. How is this process carried out?

First, you need to open Command Prompt from the Windows Start menu and run it as administrator by right-clicking. Then, you need to paste two commands that we share below into the writing space and then press Enter for each one you enter:

  • cd %programfiles%/Common Files/Microsoft Shared/ClickToRun

  • officec2rclient.exe /update user updatetoversion=16.0.17628.20164

Once you have completed this process and returned to the previous version, you can disable updates from any Office program, following this path: File, Account and then selecting the Disable update option in Update options.

But this is not the end of it, as Microsoft has recently warned of the correction of an Outlook problem that was causing conflict with security updates for the desktop version and, therefore, email servers stopped synchronizing via the Exchange ActiveSync protocol.

In principle, this type of oversight is corrected automatically and should no longer cause any errors, but if this is your case and you are experiencing this error, the solution is to copy and paste the same commands as those in Office into the Command Prompt again.
