YouTube launches a new function to take screenshots

Is it over to use extensions to be able to take screenshots? Until now we were used to taking advantage of specialized tools, but now the video platform allows us to take snapshots ourselves without the need for any software.

Double-right-clicking when a YouTube video is playing gives you access to a secondary menu of features that we love. It is there where we find, for example, the useful Picture-in-Picture mode, which allows you to watch videos while you are doing other things. Now a new function is also added that appears with the name "Copy frame" and that you can already imagine what it is for.

Days after we found this new feature, both Google and Microsoft have announced that it is a new tool available in their browsers, Chrome and Edge respectively. Therefore, you can use it on YouTube, but also in other videos that you find on the net.

Although we would have used another name for the function, the important thing here is that we can finally take screenshots quickly and easily. The way to do it will vary depending on the browser you are using and the way in which you will save the screenshots will also change.

 

 

In any case, it gives us the feeling that YouTube is still doing some tests with this tool and that it has to polish its operation. Thus, as we tell you in the next paragraph, using the function in Chrome is more cumbersome than you might expect, but in Firefox it works really well.

Today, we could tell you that extensions like Screenshot YouTube are still going to be necessary, at least for now. The reason is that what you do on YouTube through the browser is simply copy the image of the video, but not save it. So, you then have to go into an image program and use an option like Import clipboard so that you can already store it.

 

 

To do this, first load the video of which you want to capture an image. Then it looks for the right moment to capture and leaves the image paused. Now double right-click on the video image with your mouse and from the drop-down menu, click on “Copy Frame”. Now you will have taken the image to the Windows clipboard, so you will only have to "launch" the image in a compatible program. Then you save and it's done.

However, as we told you, in other browsers, luckily, the system for using the screenshots is automatic. Now we will tell you everything so that you know in which browser you are most interested in playing YouTube if you are going to take screenshots.

In other browsers

If you use Edge, the bad news we have to give you is that the system is exactly the same as Chrome. The only thing that changes is that the option is not called “Copy Frame”, but appears with the name “Copy Video Frame”. Once you have chosen it, you will also have to go to the image program and "dump" it to be able to crop it or save it as is.

 

 

The exception is Firefox, where you do have the opportunity to save the images directly without having to do anything additional. Just open the video, double-click on the right mouse button and choose the “Take Snapshot” option. Immediately, the program will ask you to select the folder on your computer where you are going to save the photo. In this case, if you don't touch anything, it will be saved under the name “snapshot.jpg”, but you can customize it while you prepare to download.

Both with Firefox and with Edge or Chrome, the photos that you copy-download are in a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and have a variable space depending on whether you save them directly or not. The program that you are going to use to dump the image also influences the weight, since some Windows tools such as XnView can greatly optimize the weight.

 

 

So while the feature still has room for improvement and we understand why it's not being announced, it does seem like a good way to go. You can use it with any type of video, both with songs and with gameplays or videos of your favorite youtubers. It will be necessary to see if it improves and if in the end it allows us not only to capture photos automatically in any browser, but also if a function is activated to make block captures.
