Why it's a bad idea to turn off your router when you leave home or every night

Even if you are one of those who decide to turn off the router every night or every time you leave home, there are different reasons that can make you change your mind. Not only because your house will be left without an Internet connection, but for the router's own good. For this reason, it is worth knowing in more detail what the simple action of constantly turning off the router implies.

There are certain times when it is a good idea to turn off the device that gives us access to the Internet. For example, when there is a connection problem or when we are going to manually update the router. In these cases, there is no other option than to turn it off. Not only because it is a good way to solve the problem in question, it is also a mandatory step during updates.

Leaving aside these moments, the rest of the times when you decide to turn off the router are not the best. But, to clear up any doubts, let's find out what the drawbacks are of constantly turning off this device.

What happens if I always turn it off?

First of all, if you are one of those who have a Smart Home, then you are not interested in cutting off the Internet at home. And all because you will lose remote control of the smart devices that you have spread around the house. From plugs, light bulbs to the video surveillance system that you have set up in your home. So it is not only something that affects you every night, but also every time you leave home, since they will not have an Internet connection. And this is just the beginning.

For example, one of the problems that arise from turning off the router every night is the updates . In most of these devices, they are loaded automatically. And the time chosen to launch the new firmware with its respective security patches is usually at night. With this, the equipment restarts itself once it loads the update. However, if you turn it off at night, technically, these devices will not be able to update. So you will have to do it manually, something that not all users know how to do.

In addition to this, there are two other disadvantages that should be known: the router's lifespan is reduced and if you have a landline, it will not work. Regarding the first point, the fact of constantly turning it off causes its lifespan to deteriorate earlier than expected, since it is designed to be on continuously. Hence, it can go weeks without turning off. On the other hand, the landline will not work because it depends on the fiber router.

So, in general, the simple fact of constantly paying for this equipment will cause its useful life to be reduced and, not only this, but it will also work worse. Basically, because as we said before, these devices are designed to be always on. So, when is it better to turn them off? The clearest examples are if you notice that the connection is bad, it is overheating or if you update it manually. But, you will surely find other times when you will need to restart it or turn it off.
