Fiber doesn´t slow down: it already exceeds 15 million lines

If during the month of September last year we were able to know that fiber to the home (FTTH) did not stop growing, since it almost reached 15 million lines in Spain, now is when this figure can be confirmed in our country. The CNMC confirms that fiber lines have already exceeded this figure and are close to reaching 16 million, taking into account that these data are those accumulated until the month of February.

Operators in Spain do not stop adding new fiber lines. Until last February 2024, there were already up to 15.6 million customers with fiber. In addition, a monthly increase of more than 100,000 lines was obtained, and 34.6% of the total are from Movistar. Therefore, the operator that concentrates the most FTTH lines.

Movistar and MásMóvil, the only ones that win in fixed broadband

The figure of 15 million fiber lines has already been exceeded, in fact, up to 15.6 million have already been added. But, with the latest data collected by the CNMC (the National Markets and Competition Commission) you can see the situation of the main operators in Spain. For example, Movistar has added more than 300,000 new fiber lines from February 2023 to the same month, but in 2024. And it has 34.6% of the total FTTH lines (5.4 million). Now, 72.6% of the total lines are in Movistar, Orange and the MásMóvil Group. Therefore, MásOrange also plays an important role in this aspect.

On the other hand, as we can see in the previous graph, Orange (-4.5) and Vodafone (-10.6) are negative with respect to the monthly gain of fixed broadband lines in February of this year. Movistar adds 4.8; the MásMóvil 7 Group (counted in thousands). Compared to 52.6 for the rest of the MVNOs.

It must be taken into account that Orange counts Jazztel data, and the MásMóvil Group includes these operators: MasMóvil, Yoigo, Pepephone, Xtra Telecom and Euskaltel. In addition to this, it must be clear that the CNMC also has lines of other technologies, such as ADSL, HFC or FTTH.

Movistar, Orange and Vodafone lose mobile lines

Leaving aside fiber and fixed broadband lines of operators, the CNMC also releases the monthly net gain of mobile lines during the month of February. On this occasion, mobile telephony lost almost 25,000 lines and closed the month with 59.5 million lines. Of the total percentage, Movistar, Orange and Vodafone have 70.3% of the lines on the market.

Now, the truth is that they were the ones that lost the most during February: Movistar with -18.21, Orange with -30.66 and Vodafone with -86.38 (in thousands). It must be taken into account that more than 500,000 numbers were ported to another operator. And the MVNOs as a whole recorded a net positive jump in portability. However, the MásMóvil Group obtained a profit during February of 28.74 (thousands). Therefore, it has been the only major operator that has had a real profit during that month, compared to Movistar, Orange and Vodafone.
